Giuseppe Quintarelli is a legendary estate located in the hills north of Verona in the heart of the Valpolicella appellation. Regarded by many as the one of the greatest Amarone producers, they are known for their traditional, deep, complex wines packaged with distinctive handwritten labels. Quintarelli, known as “Il Maestro del Veneto, died in 2012 aged 84, but the winery remains family-owned and managed. This Valpolicella blend is based on three indigenous red-wine grape varieties grown in the Veneto region in Italy’s northeast: Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella

“The bouquet on the 2014 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ca’ del Merlo is stunning, with peppery herbs and florals evolving into a mix of crushed blackberries and clove. It’s silky and elegant in feel, washing a pure mix of wild berry fruits and sweet spices across the palate, all nicely framed by mineral-tinged acids. Violet florals resonate throughout the long and slightly smoky finish, as this tapers off long and fresh with a tart twang. The 2014 Ca del Merlo trades power for grace, and does so with style. It’s a blend of 80% traditional Valpolicella grapes, along with 20% Cabernet and Merlot. This is an understated beauty.”
