Onewine Editor’s choice.Sangiovese is a varietal in Italy that has the same important standing as Cabernet / Merlot in France – a varietal that sometimes is puzzling in the many clone – expressions you will find in Chianti, Brunello, Vino Nobile, Carmignano etc. Here in Paolo’s two wines (Alberaia & Macchie) – it is made with four different clones of sangiovese, three of which are widely used for Brunello and the last for Chianti Classico. F9, selection massale, VCR23 and VCR24. It is fascinating to taste this wine as you can pick up hints of sangiovese in it’s different expressions. Try the Alberaia – the simpler of the two – to get a feel of true high quality sangiovese. The Macchie has more oak influences when young but with more complexity and layers of flavours
