Schiavenza’s Barolo Riserva is produced only in great vintages.Cru Broglio is 360 metres asl, composed of calcareous clay soil. This wine undergoes fermentation in cement vats without temperature control, for 15-20 days, aging in Slavonian oak casks of 20-40 hectolitres in size. The 2001 Broglio Riserva is tasted today is really wonderful. Deep brilliant ruby-purplish in colour, it shows a nose of the “Serralunga style”, complex, austere, full of nuances (the classic licorice, laurel, forest floor, notes of minerals, leather, raspberry and hints of tar and truffle and then bay leaves and rosemary), but very elegant, fresh, fruity. The taste is very alive, full of backbone, with impressive tannins that “bite” a little. Full bodied, and filled with great dynamism, with a long finish, a marked minerally character, almost salty. In my opinion, this is what a true Barolo riserva should be like and hence truly deserve to be appreciated fully. Leaving it in the cellar to age further and when you open some bottles in later years, it will not betray you but instead reward you with immense pleasure of harmony and complexity.
