WS: Penetrating aromas of wild cherry, wild berry, rose, incense and white pepper mark this red, which is silky and fluid, yet with a firm underpinning of tannins and vibrant acidity. A mineral element emerges on the long finish.

AG: The 2014 Gattinara Valferana is an infant. Powerful, tight and austere, the 2014 is striking. Readers will have to be patient with the 2014, as it needs a lot of time to be at its best. Even so, the wine’s inner sweetness, fragrance and dimension are impressive. In 2014, Valferana is a wine of pure and total sensuality.

JS: West-facing at 300 meters. Dried roses and rose hips with very precise, elegant aromas that have delicacy in comparison to 2015. Some blue flowers here, too, as well as a blueberry thread. The palate has a gently muscular feel with assertive, fine, succulent tannins that hold gently firm at the finish. Long, measured and deep.
