Why this wine is special
The wine is made from 100% Alicante (a local biotype closely related to Grenache/Garnacha), a grape rarely found in Umbria. According to Feudi Spada, the variety traces its roots to 1669, when Orazio Spada returned from southern France with Grenache vine cuttings and planted them around Viceno. Those vines were preserved for generations, making this wine a tribute to one of Umbria's most unusual viticultural traditions.
The vineyards are located in Viceno, Castel Viscardo, about 450 metres above sea level, on ancient clay-limestone soils rich in Pleistocene marine sediments. The altitude provides cool nights that preserve acidity and aromatic freshness, while the mineral-rich soils contribute structure, elegance, and a distinctive savoury character.
Only around 1,300 bottles are produced annually. The grapes are hand-harvested, fermented in traditional cement tanks, undergo complete malolactic fermentation in French oak barriques, mature for 12 months in barrel, and spend another year in bottle before release. This extended ageing integrates the oak beautifully while allowing the fruit and terroir to shine.
The 2019 vintage offers remarkable aromatic depth. Expect layers of blackcurrant, blueberry, blackberry, cherry, plum and fig, complemented by floral notes of violet and iris, Mediterranean herbs, sweet spices, roasted coffee, cocoa and subtle smoky nuances. On the palate it is full-bodied yet remarkably refined, with silky tannins, vibrant freshness, and a long, harmonious finish that combines power with elegance.
"Orazio" is more than a premium red—it is a tribute to Orazio Spada, the 17th-century nobleman whose passion for viticulture helped introduce Grenache to this corner of Umbria. Each vintage also features artwork by renowned Italian ceramic artist Marino Moretti, making every bottle both a wine and a collector's piece.

At the heart of the project is Alessandro Leoni, an agronomist and passionate vigneron whose approach begins in the vineyard. Rather than imposing a predetermined style, Alessandro observes the land, experiments and seeks to reveal what Viceno can naturally produce. That philosophy gives Feudi Spada its individuality: these are wines of place, but also wines of curiosity and discovery.
