Description

The Feudi Spada “Orazio” Umbria Rosso IGP 2019 is a distinctive wine because it combines a fascinating historical story, an unusual grape variety, and a terroir that is rarely associated with this style of red wine. Rather than following the classic Umbrian formula of Sangiovese or Sagrantino, Feudi Spada has created a wine that celebrates centuries of local history while producing a refined, modern expression.

Why this wine is special

  1. A rare expression of Alicante (Grenache) in Umbria

The wine is made from 100% Alicante (a local biotype closely related to Grenache/Garnacha), a grape rarely found in Umbria. According to Feudi Spada, the variety traces its roots to 1669, when Orazio Spada returned from southern France with Grenache vine cuttings and planted them around Viceno. Those vines were preserved for generations, making this wine a tribute to one of Umbria's most unusual viticultural traditions.

  1. Exceptional high-altitude terroir

The vineyards are located in Viceno, Castel Viscardo, about 450 metres above sea level, on ancient clay-limestone soils rich in Pleistocene marine sediments. The altitude provides cool nights that preserve acidity and aromatic freshness, while the mineral-rich soils contribute structure, elegance, and a distinctive savoury character.

  1. Small-production craftsmanship

Only around 1,300 bottles are produced annually. The grapes are hand-harvested, fermented in traditional cement tanks, undergo complete malolactic fermentation in French oak barriques, mature for 12 months in barrel, and spend another year in bottle before release. This extended ageing integrates the oak beautifully while allowing the fruit and terroir to shine.

  1. Remarkable complexity and balance

The 2019 vintage offers remarkable aromatic depth. Expect layers of blackcurrant, blueberry, blackberry, cherry, plum and fig, complemented by floral notes of violet and iris, Mediterranean herbs, sweet spices, roasted coffee, cocoa and subtle smoky nuances. On the palate it is full-bodied yet remarkably refined, with silky tannins, vibrant freshness, and a long, harmonious finish that combines power with elegance.

  1. A wine with history and personality

"Orazio" is more than a premium red—it is a tribute to Orazio Spada, the 17th-century nobleman whose passion for viticulture helped introduce Grenache to this corner of Umbria. Each vintage also features artwork by renowned Italian ceramic artist Marino Moretti, making every bottle both a wine and a collector's piece.

Why wine lovers appreciate it

Feudi Spada "Orazio" stands out because it offers something genuinely different from most Umbrian reds. It combines the generous fruit and spice of Grenache with the freshness, minerality and elegance of Umbria's cool, elevated vineyards. The result is a wine of exceptional complexity, silky texture and remarkable ageing potential—an uncommon and memorable expression of both grape and place. It pairs beautifully with roasted meats, game, rich pasta dishes, aged cheeses and truffle-based cuisine.

Feudi Spada — Discover the Other Face of Umbria

For wine lovers looking beyond the familiar names of Italy, Feudi Spada offers something genuinely intriguing: wines born from a little-known corner of Umbria where history, altitude and volcanic terroir come together. In Viceno, near Castel Viscardo, vineyards sit on the slopes of the Alfina plateau, with high-altitude sites and distinctive clay-limestone soils creating wines marked by freshness, elegance and mineral character.

But Feudi Spada is about more than terroir. Its story reaches back to 1669, when Orazio Spada brought Grenache cuttings back from France. Remarkably, descendants of these historic vines (more than 90 years old) are still preserved today, giving the estate a living connection to its past. Alongside these old vines, Feudi Spada explores varieties such as Grechetto, Syrah, Riesling Renano and Chardonnay, showing how international and local grapes can express themselves through an Umbrian identity.

At the heart of the project is Alessandro Leoni, an agronomist and passionate vigneron whose approach begins in the vineyard. Rather than imposing a predetermined style, Alessandro observes the land, experiments and seeks to reveal what Viceno can naturally produce. That philosophy gives Feudi Spada its individuality: these are wines of place, but also wines of curiosity and discovery.

If you enjoy wines that have a story, a sense of place and something unexpected to say, Feudi Spada is a winery worth discovering.
