The 2006 Ghemme is a little firmer and fresher than the 2007 tasted alongside it. Rose petals, flowers, mint and sweet red cherries all take shape in a striking wine loaded with personality and pure class. The slightly more classic style will appeal to traditionalists, but the truth is both the 2006 and 2007 are quite beautiful; they will just suit different needs. A clean, mineral-drenched finish rounds things out in style. Ghemme wine takes its name from the town of the same name in northern Piedmont. 100% nebbiolo from the vineyards of Carella, Baraggiola Valera and Cavenago in the hills near Monte Rosa (second highest in Europe) formed during the interglacial period. Soil is rich in minerals due to significant composition of crush rocks and soil (moraine). Vineyards located at 280 – 310 m asl. During fermentation, racking was carried out twice a day until the sugar was completely transformed after which the cap is totally submerged for a period. The wine is then aged in oak cask for at least 20 months followed by bottle refining for 12 months before release. The colour is a beautifully clear ruby-garnet red. The scent is intense and persistent, elegant and ethereal and hints of raisins, violets, dry rose petals and raspberries. Vibrant and dynamic when first released but the intense flavors will gain further width and depth with time
